I originally had the idea to write a version of happy birthday after a discussion on copyright and the traditional happy birthday song. I wanted to make a version that had a Beatles sound but not as angular sounding as their ‘White Album’ attempt. I was trying to sound between the harmony of ‘Hard Day’s Night’ and the country aesthetic and storytelling of ‘The Ballad of John and Yoko’. I use the pre-chorus to destabilise the key centre in a ‘Hard Day’s Night’ fashion. The song subject is aimed at my wife, but I deliberately missed out parts I’d written that where too specific to myself and her. This was in an attempt, along with its simplistic lyrics, to make it more accessible.
